Was the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki Constitutional?

Don't get me wrong these men were Terrorist. But, they where also US citizens. They are still protected by the US Constitution, without allowing them there rights do we let the government do as they please. The government practiced what they call "extrajudicial punishment  or killing", it is when the President feels there is no other option. I believe this wouldn't have been handle the same way if these men were in some other country. I don't have a problem hunting down terrorist, but what happens when they are US citizens and they are in America. Is the government going to send a Predator UAV into rural America. We have so many assets at our disposal, but the administration seems to be a little trigger happy lately.
